yes. That’s what she said. She said yes.
To start at the beginning though.
On the 14th, I dropped my grandmother’s wedding ring off at Kay Jewelers, and had a few repairs done on it. It needed a new shank, and the setting needed fixed. Shank being the part of the band that goes under the finger, and the setting being three fingers of gold that hold the stone in place. I tell the guy repeatedly that I need it by Christmas Eve. He says ok. I go on my merry way, and tell C ont to make any plans for Christmas Eve, cuz I’ve got it covered.
In the meantime, I’ve built things up a bit, and told C I have a big surprise for her on Christmas Eve. She needs to dress fairly nice, and have something warm to wear with her because we may have to walk to “the event”. She guesses that I’m proposing, so I go into cover-your-ass mode. A proposal is supposed to be a surprise. So, I contact Tricia, C’s best friend, and have her hint that C is actually meeting my mom on Christmas Eve. So, C proceeds to get all nervous about that.
Friday, I call Kay Jewelers about the ring. Some asshat down there tells me, “But Mr. Miller, our promise date on that isn’t until the 27th.” I was floored. I couldn’t believe this. Eventually I talk to a manager, and they say they’re having the work completed, and the ring will be overnighted and available on Saturday.
Saturday, I call again, just before I start work. They track the package. Well, the dimwits sent the package via DHL, who apparently don’t ship on Saturdays or federal hollidays, so he’ll have the ring for me on Monday.
Ok. Fine. Like I can back out of proposing on Christmas Eve now, after making such a big deal of having a surprise for C on Christmas Eve. Fortunately, her mom had a ring I could borrow for the occasion, and that could act as a suitable stand-in until I could get the real thing.
C picks me up from work at six on Saturday. (Yes. I had to work on Christmas Eve.) I had the ring stashed in the glove box, and a tie stashed under a coat in the back seat. She tells me that I need to drive, because she has no idea where we’re going.
I get in the car, and start heading up North Lamar. She looks somewhat confused, and I could tell that she was thinking to herself, “but this isn’t the way to the airport” and later, “ah well. Rob always takes messed up routes to get to places”. I turn towards Zilker park, and she opens with, “But honey, I’m sorry, the trail of lights ended yesterday.” I tell her that I know, and I’ve got everything under control. Then I pull into Zilker where they’ve still got the giant Christmas tree set up made out of lights. I tell her to go wait under the tree, and I’ll be there in a minute. I just have to make sure everything is ready.
At this point, she’s over there, expecting me to walk up with my mom in-tow. I put the tie on, pop the ring into my pocket, wait a minute for my stomache to stop trying to leap out of place, and head over there. I tell her that someone special will be there soon, but while we’re waiting, we can spin around under the tree (it’s an Austin tradition). We spin around, looking up at the tree, and when we stop, I immediately drop down to one knee and asked her to marry me. She was still a bit dizzy, but her eyes got really big, and for some reason she said yes. Frankly, I think she just likes my butt. 😀
She still doesn’t have the real ring. We were going to leave my visit with my son a bit early to try and get it, but when I called, the idiot manager at Kay Jewelers tells me that he can’t have it until today. It had better be here today, or I’m going to rip his balls off. Fortunately, he did give me a 50% discount on the repairs.
Saturday night I called Connon, and asked him to be my best man. He said yes, and so that’s set. C is assuming that Tricia knows she’s the maid of honor. I think they’ve known that for a while now really. And she’s asked her other friend Nichole to be a brides-maid.
We’ve got a basic plan set up. Going to be at the Texas Rennaisance Festival most likely, or some similar place. We’re hoping for November 4th of this year, but it’ll depend on $$$ and such. We know that I’ll be wearing full plate armor, while she wears a navy blue velvet dress. She’s thinking about having her ladies wear a pale blue, but isn’t sure yet. Myself, Connon, and one or two other guys will be wearing green tabards. Will and Jacob are the ring bearers. And that’s pretty much it so far.
