I’ve noticed that my taste in fantasy, folklore, and fiction in general is changing. I don’t know why. I think it’s broadening though, so that’s a good thing. I used to be VERY focused on mythology and fantasy as it comes out of the British Isles. I’m expanding a great deal, and I really want to look at Northern Europe as a whole.
In the past few months, I’ve learned a few generalities. First off, I had no idea that Rome was anywhere near as influential throughout the far northern parts of Europe. They ruled a much larger expanse of land than I had ever realized. For some reason, I’d always thought of them extending their power around the Mediteranean, south, and east, and towards Spain and France. I’ve read about the various Celt tribes, and some that were different from anything I’d ever read. Now, I can’t remember the specifics of it all, but I’ve really enjoyed reading the material, watching the documentaries, and discussing it all with people of similar interests.
It’s nice when the world broadens in your mind, rather than narrows, as it usually does as we age.
